2-Day Data Institute with Dr. Victoria Bernhardt

Unlock the Power of Data for Continuous School Improvement

Schools can become much more efficient and innovative learning organizations when they use data effectively, school-wide. When schools use data well, they are able to see which processes are working and which processes are not working to ensure that all students become proficient.  Using data to improve all processes enables teachers, collectively, to take their practices to the next level and to make a difference for all students.

During this pre-conference, participants will learn how to analyze their comprehensive school wide data profiles (demographics, perceptions, student learning, school processes) created with the SchoolPortfolio application. Team members will evaluate what works and what does not work in their learning organizations, and begin to develop plans for student learning growth at every grade level, subject area, and with every student group.

OUTCOMES

Everyone understands—

  •
    • The Continuous School Improvement (CSI) Framework.
    • What and how data are important for continuous school improvement.
    • How to analyze all types of data for continuous school improvement.
    • How to work through a “problem” with data—getting to contributing causes.
    • How to create a shared vision.
    • How to create a continuous school improvement plan that is based on comprehensive data analysis and a shared vision.
    • How to know if what we are doing is making a difference.
    • How to engaging staff in the work of comprehensive data analysis and continuous school improvement.

Predictive analytics is used to create models that can anticipate success at the individual level on EQAO tests and on first year GPA at university. It will eventually be used for anticipating chances of graduating from high school within 5 years. The added values are the identification of success predictors, targeting students in need of remedial programs and guiding the type of intervention required. It also allows the ability to calculate return on investment by quantifying the success of the interventions.Predictive analytics has been used in conjunction with Compass for Success, IBM Cognos and IBM SPSS.
